Rory has been working in clay since 2018 , often using the local clay dug from the ditch by the studio.
This clay is a rough earthenware that can be fired to stoneware temperatures, when it begins to turn black. A white Shino underglaze is then put over the clay and scored through with the design, reinforced by a drawing in iron oxide.
Rory also uses the stark white of Porcelain as a basis for vessels worked on with drawings made from black iron oxide . He has also experimented with using porcelain as a surface for woodblock prints.

Many of Rory’s drawings are made in preparation for woodcuts or ceramic pieces. He often draws in ink on fine Chinese paper and then pastes this in reverse onto a woodblock so that the white areas can be cut out.
